Root (or base) Chakra

Updated: Apr 7, 2018

The first chakra is the Base or Root Chakra. The Sanskrit name for this chakra is Muladhara which means root. This chakra relates to our survival instincts, our roots, our foundation, our feelings of fear and instincts for self preservation. The associated element is earth. The associated color is red. The location of this chakra is at the base of the spine. One of the Hindu deities associated with this chakra is Ganesha, the elephant headed God, remover of obstacles. When this chakra is balanced, it provides vitality for the body. You feel a sense of well being, grounded and in control. When they are not balanced, they are considered blocked. This can manifest as an excess or a deficiency. A deficient first chakra leaves you lifeless, sluggish or passive and you will be more prone to anxiety, suspicion and depression. An excessive first chakra leads to one being agitated, aggressive and having too much energy. One would be more prone to hoarding, fearing change and grounding through physical weight with an excessive first chakra. Basically, the deficiency equals avoidance while excess equals overcompensation.

To begin to balance this chakra, anchor yourself in your environment. For this chakra, it's important to connect to the earth. Go outside!! Physical activity promotes a balanced first chakra. Aromatherapy is a great balancing tool. Use earthy smells like ylang-ylang, patchouli, rosemary and sandalwood. Last but definitely not least, root chakra healing stones.
