This is the final chakra in this series. The 7th chakra, is the crown chakra. The Sanskrit name for this chakra is Sahasrara, meaning a thousand fold. The associated element is thought and the associated color is purple or white. The location of this chakra is at the top of the head. The basic goal of this chakra is expanded consciousness. When this chakra is finally opened and balanced, we reach the state of enlightenment. It is difficult for our mind to understand this state of being. The closest we can come to it is the state we reach in meditation. Deficiency in the crown chakra can cause indecision and a lack of joy; whereas excess may cause you to be overly detached. It may also cause excessive energy which can lead to frustration. A balanced crown chakra opens you up to your divine energy and gives you access to your subconscious mind. The process of opening to a higher consciousness is most often done through meditation. Do you see a theme with the upper chakras?? :) There really is no greater way to open your crown chakra than through meditation. Try one of the below techniques for a month and see which practice resonates with you. My personal favorite is mantra meditation!

1) Trataka -gazing

"the eyes are the windows to the soul"

Sit on the floor in a comfortable position and choose an item that you can focus your attention on. A great object is a lit candle. Simply focus your gaze and calm you breath and mind.

2) Mantra

Again, sitting on the floor (or chair) in a comfortable position and begin to internally repeat a one or two syllable word slowly and calmly. Common mantras include Om and So Hum. Choosing words that have no meaning to you allows you to concentrate more on the sound.

3) Counting your breaths

Gain a steady rhythm of counting your breaths (while seated). This will begin to slow your breathing and calm your mind.

Other ways to balance this chakra include: spending a day in silence, experience a sensory deprivation tank (One just opened near me!!) or study a new religion or spiritual system.

Gemstones to help with this process include: Amethyst, Purple Striped Agate, Howlite, Lava, Indian Agate and White Quartz
